What is SIC?

The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) is a system of classifying businesses by code, created by the U.S government in 1937. The coding system is being currently replaced by the more recent North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), a number of government agencies, such as the Securities and Exchange Commission, still use the old system.

The codes use a 4-digit number to classify various industries, indicating the primary industry or business activity that a company is involved in, such as 0100 for Agriculture, 3674 for Semiconductors & Related Devices, 6189 for Asset-Backed Securities, and so on. The first two digits indicate the general area of industry, and the last two specify a narrower specialization (the acronym “Nec” stands for “Not elsewhere classified”).

The codes allow for some intelligibility for a person familiar with the convention, but such knowledge isn’t necessary, since there are many user-friendly databases that will allow you to find the code for the industry that interests you.

How do you use SIC to create email lists?

Searching for SIC codes and creating mailing lists is easy!

1. Go to the “Email Lists By Industry“
2. Search SIC codes either by keyword, or by SIC code if you already know it.
3. You can sort the list by code, by industry keyword alphabetically, by price or by number of records.

What is NAICS?

The North American Industry Classification System is similar to SIC, except it has a modernized list of industries, and, crucially, was created in collaboration with Mexican and Canadian institutions, and includes industries in Mexico and Canada as well, allowing for easier integration and classification across the major economies of North America.

Unlike the SIC system, which only had 4-digit codes, NAICS uses a 6-digit classification system, where the first two digits indicate the general business sector, the next digit stands for the subsector, the fourth digit ? the industry group, and the fifth stands for a particular industry. The last digit indicates national industries.

While the codes’ main purpose is to allow government agencies keep track of industries more easily, the Classification System can be of great help to marketers and research agencies as well. With NAICS codes, it’s easy to find every business in a particular industry, whether for the purpose of statistics or marketing and promotions.

How do you use NAICS to create email lists?
